Think - Eat - Save : Simple Tips on the eve of World Environment Day

The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated globally towards creating positive environmental actions, involving people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener and brighter outlook for themselves and for the future generations. WED is celebrated every year on June 5.

The theme for this year’s celebrations is Think. Eat. Save, an anti-food waste and food loss campaign. The campaign aims to encourage reduce food wastage.

According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tonnes of food is getting wasted. The vast amount of food going to the landfills amount to a major squandering of resources, including water, land, energy, labour, capital. In addition, it needlessly produces greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to global warming and climate changes. It is also estimated that 1 out of every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger!

This World Environment Day, team members are invited to join the cause to prevent food wastage. In our everyday lives, we too are wasting food in some way or the other either at our homes, at restaurants or in the office cafeterias.  It is estimated that over 250 kgs of food is getting wasted  in our cafeterias daily because team members take extra food but do not consume it!

Here are a few simple tips that could help reduce food wastage at our homes, at restaurants or in the office cafeterias:
·         When at home, look in your kitchen cupboards, fridge and freezer. A lot of food wastage can be reduced by knowing what provisions you already have and need to be used up before you shop next for the provisions

·         Where and how we store the provisions we buy makes a big difference to how long they last and how much gets wasted. Use the provisions with the closest expiry date for cooking first and store safely the others that can be used later

·         While serving food and eating, either breakfast, lunch, snacks or dinner, be it at home, at a restaurant or in the office, please ensure that you take only what you can eat and do not waste food. Take only what is needed and never over-fill your plates resulting in wastage.
O
Often people throw food, if they dont taste nice. Instead think once about the people who are starving days long for getting few bread crumbs or a glass of water. If we care enough then for sure the day will come when there wont be scarcity for either food or for water.

·         You could look for local organizations that collect prepared food from homes, restaurants, caterers and corporate cafeterias and promptly distribute to the hungry people in the communities.

Any other ideas are heartily invited via comments.

Let us feed the hungry, not the landfills.

What's the best way to invest in gold? - equitymaster.com

In our previous articles, we discussed the pros and cons of investing in gold . We then talked about one way of investing in gold, i.e., physical gold . We discussed the merits and demerits of each way. But one thing that was common to all of them was the storage and insurance of holding gold in its physical form. The costs involved can eat away the gains. And not all investors like that. So the next best way is to invest in the non-physical format of gold. And this is exactly what we intend to discuss in this article.

Investing in non-physical gold

This can be done in either/ all of these ways-

ETFs - This is one of the most talked about ways when it comes to gold investing. The exchange traded funds or the ETFs. Conceptually, an ETF is a stock like security. It is traded on the stock exchange like any other stock. And in the same way that a stock has a company behind it, an ETF has the underlying asset behind it or in this case gold. The ETF owns the gold which is deposited in a bank vault. Therefore the value of the ETF security is equivalent to the gold being held by the fund.

The good part about holding an ETF is that it frees an investor from the innate hassle of holding and storing gold. The securities are held in the investor's demat account like any other stock. And like most stocks, the liquidity is high which means that the investors can buy and sell at a moment's notice. The best part is that the movement of the investment value mirrors the performance of actual gold. And the investor can invest in smaller amounts as well. Something that is difficult when it comes to buying physical gold.

But the drawback is the fees involved. The ETFs do charge a fee which is a percentage of the total investment made. In addition to that, some ETFs also charge for storing the underlying gold in the bank vault. But these are still lower than what one would pay for storing physical gold. Despite the difficulties, ETFs still provide a convenient and easy way of investing in gold.

Gold company stocks - The second way to invest in gold is the indirect way. The investor can invest in the stocks of companies whose underlying business is gold. This could be through owning gold mining or gold refining stocks. The underlying assumption in investing in this way is that the fortunes of these companies and hence their earnings are dependent on and mirror the performance of gold. Herein lies the merit as well as the demerit of this form of investment. The merit is again that it reduces the hassle of investing in physical gold.

But the demerit is that the company's performance maybe very different from the performance of gold itself. Every company has its own fundamental strength and weakness. In addition to this there are so many other things like macro factors, company's management, its vision, its cost structure, etc that can affect its performance. For example in case of a gold mining company, it may not get the license or the discovery may fall short of expectations, etc. Therefore the performance of the stock may not necessarily be in line with that of gold itself.

Gold derivatives - The commodity exchange has derivative products where the underlying commodity is gold. Futures and options provide another way of investing in non-physical gold. What you need is an account with a commodity broker and you can get started. Like any other account there are brokerage and account charges involved but like any other derivative, the potential for gains (and of course losses) is high too. The charges tend to get offset by the gains.

The problem with investing in gold derivatives is the quantum of money required. Derivatives usually trade in lots which mean that the initial investment amount required may not be for all small investors. In addition to this, the liquidity of some type of contracts maybe low. As a result the desired contract may or may not always be available.

Other ways - Other non physical forms of gold could be something like a fund of fund. This is a mutual fund that holds other gold related funds as its units. Another way could be to hold a global gold fund that invests in the stocks of gold companies listed in global exchanges. Gold certificates are also an option. However these certificates are currently not offered in India. But it is proposed to be introduced soon.

Overall, investing in physical gold works well for investors who prefer to hold on to something tangible. But for those who wish to avoid the hassles of delivery and storage, the non physical form works well too. The advantages of non-physical gold are aplenty. They provide an easy way of investment for even small ticket investments. The liquidity is high and the performance is similar to that of gold. But unlike physical gold there is nothing tangible that you have in hand.

With this we have given you the various ways in which you can invest in gold. So go ahead and invest if you want to. Happy investing!

Human Brain Analysis - Man vs. Woman

Human Brain Analysis - Man vs. Woman......A MUST READ!

1. MULTI-TASKING
Women - Multiple process
Womens brains designed to concentrate multiple task at a time.
Women can Watch a TV and Talk over phone and cook.
Men - Single Process
Mens brains designed to concentrate only one work at a time. Men can not watch TV and talk over the phone at the same time. they stop the TV while Talking. They can either watch TV or talk over the phone or cook.

2. LANGUAGE
Women can easily learn many languages. But can not find solutions to problems. Men can not easily learn languages, they can easily solve problems. That's why in average a 3 years old girl has three times higher vocabulary than a 3 yeard old boy.

3. ANALYTICAL SKILLS
Mens brains has a lot of space for handling the analytical process. They can analyze and find the solution for a process and design a map of a building easily. But If a complex map is viewed by women, they can not understand it. Women can not understand the details of a map easily, For them it is just a dump of lines on a paper.

4. CAR DRIVING.
While driving a car, mans analytical spaces are used in his brain. He can drive a car fastly. If he sees an object at long distance, immediately his brain classifies the object (bus or van or car) direction and speed of the object and he drives accordingly. Where woman take a long time to recognize the object direction/ speed. Mans single process mind stops the audio in the car (if any), then concentrates only on driving.

5. LYING
When men lie to women face to face, they get caught easily. Womans super natural brain observes facial expression 70%, body language 20% and words coming from the mouth 10%. Mens brain does not have this. Women easily lie to men face to face.
So guys, do not lie face to face.

6. PROBLEMS SOLVING
If a man have a lot of problems, his brain clearly classifies the problems and puts them in individual rooms in the brain and then finds the solution one by one. You can see many guys looking at the sky for a long time. If a woman has a lot of problems, her brain can not classify the problems. she wants some one to hear that. After telling everything to a person she goes happily to bed. She does not worry about the problems being solved or not.

7. WHAT THEY WANT
Men want status, success, solutions, big process, etc... But Women want relationship, friends, family, etc...

8. UNHAPPINESS
If women are unhappy with their relations, they can not concentrate on their work. If men are unhappy with their work, they can not concentrate on the relations.

9. SPEECH
Women use indirect language in speech. But Men use direct language.

10. HANDLING EMOTION
Women talk a lot without thinking. Men act a lot without thinking.

All About Decisions Making

Confused? Lots of options to choose from? Here are some suggestions on how to calmly and rationally make decisions:
Never make decisions when you are under pressure or in a lot of stress. Your judgment can be clouded by emotions and prejudices. Even if you are forced to make a quick decision, ask if you can be allowed enough time to think about it. Step back even for a few minutes. Take deep breaths and clear your mind.
There is nothing wrong to paying attention to gut feeling. For some strange reason, even if they can’t be logically explained, they often turn out right. Listen to your instincts.
Some people like putting thoughts in writing. You can create two columns – pros or advantages, and cons or disadvantages. These can help you organize thoughts, making decision making much easier.
You can also consider the point of view of others. You don’t need to take their advice, just get different perspectives.
Own it. Whatever the outcome of your decision is, be prepared to take responsibility for the consequences. If you made a mistake, learn from it and use it when making future decisions.

How to Make Effective Decisions

Decisions… Decisions… Decisions can be swift or long-drawn. No matter how long it takes you to reach one, just make sure you try to make effective ones.
  • No magic 8-balls
Don’t ask others to decide for you. Effective decision making involves introspection. Besides, it’s always best to take responsibility for whatever you do.
  • Settle for no less than the facts
Sometimes personal biases and emotions may cloud your decisions. So get the facts straight. Look for possibly distorted ones and weed them out.
  • Split the pros and cons
Decisions will definitely have effects on things. It’s the spark that’d cause a chain reaction. So before you make one, be sure to know what may be the consequences of your action. Though you can only see as far
  • Be calm
If making a decision as a group, avoid hostilities. Clear thinking and not heated arguments is one of the best weapons in making a decision.
  • Persuade not argue
It’s better to come up with a decision with everyone on the same footing. So it’s much better to persuade people in seeing your point of view instead of simply debunking everyone else’s opinion.
  • Write things down
Seeing things in plain black and white helps you weed out things that needlessly affect your decision.
  • If in doubt, don’t decide
Take a break. Watch a movie. Sleep. Just don’t do anything if you still don’t know what to do.
  • Simulate
Try to run things through your head. Process things like a computer where you have and input, a process, then an output which translate to decision, a reaction, and then a result. If it helps, make a story out of it to help you visualize.
  • Stick to what you believe
Never compromise your ideals. Stand up for what you truly believe in especially if other would like to blackmail you emotionally or mentally.

Decision-Making Mistakes that We Often Commit

I’ve been making a lot of decisions lately and having been all too preachy on this blog has made me think hard about how I make these decisions. They’re not trivial decisions, mind you. They’re very concrete, very real, and itsconsequences are life-changing. While I wouldn’t go as far as enumerating them, I’m sure that we all face these kinds of decisions once every so often.Career decisions, marriage decisions, financial decisions – these things we can all lose sleep with.
In the pursuit of something sensible to write, I decided to focus on the factors that often lead our decisions astray. While there are always probabilities to consider with these things, there are decision errors that almost always would really f*ck you up. Here are my picks.
Hasty decisions. There are times when we need to make decisions in a jiffy but what we refer to as “haste” is a different thing. More liked in the context of “rushed.” This is often committed when one makes a decision without any facts or exploring alternatives.
Deciding on the merits of the advantages… and only those. Sometimes, when we’re enthusiastic about something, we’re blinded by all the good things about it that we often lose sight of it cons.
Tunnel vision. Deciding with very limited perspective is a dangerous thing. There are instances where you just try to apply the same framework in doing all of your decisions. Go seek expert advice. Talk to a friend. But don’t decide without getting any other perspective on the matter.
Heuristics. While there are times when using rules-of-thumb do work, criticaldecisions shouldn’t be made based on a very narrow and very rough frameworks that these rules often are. Heuristics will only work if used in a coherent set.
Taking into account irrelevant things. Worry warts and paranoid people suffer from this decision making mistake. Even if some things can actually be really negligible, the paranoid in us can force us to worry about these things. And when we do, we end up not focusing on things that do matter.
Pride. Ah, to be swallowed by your own hubris. Many decision mistakes are made because of letting pride take over everything. This even leads one to commit all the other mistakes cited here. Sometimes, it would help not to think solely about yourself at times.
